Become A Low-Carbon Workspace With KG Electrical

8 September 2021by KG Electrical

Looking to reduce your office carbon footprint? By doing your bit for the planet and making your workplace more sustainable, you’ll also save money, cut down on energy usage and boost your credentials as an eco-friendly company. You could even get a grant worth up to £5,000 towards the cost of creating a low-carbon workspace! Here’s how.

Why is being low-carbon important?

It’s no secret that saving energy will save on expenses. So, there’s a sound business case for cutting down on emissions. But the benefits may be bigger than you think. A low-carbon workspace is:

  • Innovative. Coming up with new ways to make things work is always good for business.
  • Productive. Creating a sustainable office design can minimise stress, reduce mental fatigue and elevate mood, helping your colleagues to work more effectively.
  • Attractive. Today’s consumers are on the look-out for brands that align with their principles and beliefs. By reducing your carbon footprint you could attract a whole new demographic of eco-conscious clients.

Could you be eligible for an energy efficiency grant?

The Energy Efficiency Grant Scheme offers financial support of up to £5,000 towards small and medium sized businesses, to help them reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The scheme is open to SMEs operating in Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Milton Keynes and Northamptonshire. There are all sorts of projects that could be eligible for support, including upgrades to:

  • commercial lighting systems
  • heating and cooling systems
  • renewable energy systems
  • office equipment
  • energy management tools
  • building fabric, such as insulation or double/triple glazing.

You can find out more about the grant scheme and check to see if your business is eligible on the Low Carbon Workspaces website.

Green energy tips for your business

In addition to your equipment and infrastructure, there are lots of small lifestyle changes that will help you and your staff to work more sustainably. Try these easy switches:

  • Travel on public transport, or car-share with a co-worker. Your commute can be one of the biggest carbon culprits. Cut down on your emissions by catching the bus, sharing a ride, walking or cycling, or using an electric car.
  • Switch to a laptop instead of a desktop computer. They are 80% more energy efficient!
  • Think before you print. Going paperless (or simply cutting down on printing) will save the energy that goes into paper production.
  • Ditch the bottled water. Producing and transporting plastic water bottles creates huge, unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions. The office tap is your friend!
  • Consider remote working. Dialling in on Skype could save on travel. Your office will reduce its overall heating and air conditioning footprints, too.
